About

In recent years, the landscape of digital communication has been increasingly shaped by decentralized protocols, each promising enhanced privacy, security, and user autonomy. These protocols represent diverse visions and approaches to decentralization, shaped by the philosophies of their respective founding groups. Knowing this, we set out to present a comprehensive comparative analysis of six prominent decentralized protocols: ActivityPub, AT Protocol, Nostr, Farcaster, Lens, and Diaspora*. Our goal is to offer valuable insights for developers, researchers, and enthusiasts who are navigating and contributing to the evolving decentralized web, and by examining the similarities and differences among these protocols, our paper aims to demystify the decentralized protocol space. As part of this project, we are interviewing developers of various decentralized social media protocols, to gather firsthand insights and perspectives, and we invite you to participate and share your expertise.
